(670 The Score) Sidelined since Aug. 3 with a right hamstring strain, All-Star catcher Willson Conteras has been activated from the injured list and will return to the Cubs' lineup against the Mariners on Tuesday night, manager Joe Maddon said on the Laurence Holmes Show.

Contreras' hamstring has felt good lately, and the Cubs like the pairing of him and left-hander Jon Lester, who will start Tuesday. Contreras is hitting .275 with 19 homers, 57 RBIs and an .890 OPS in 87 games.

"Getting him back with Lester, we thought it would be a good idea," Maddon said.

Veteran utilityman Ben Zobrist will also lead off for the Cubs on Tuesday, Maddon confirmed. It will be his first big league action since May 6, as he just returned Sunday from a long personal leave of absence.

"He's just such a stable personality within our group," Maddon said. "The guys definitely look up to him. Obviously, that's just who Zo is. He's the kind of guy as a baseball player, you're going to gravitate toward him because he's so matter-of-fact."

Star shortstop Javier Baez will be out of the lineup for the second straight game due to an ailing thumb, Maddon said. With the Cubs having an off day Wednesday, the thought process is to get Baez a three-day break and then have him return to action Thursday.

"It was too sore to play yesterday, his thumb," Maddon said. "Probbaly, he might tell me he might be able to play today, but with tomorrow off, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to give him a little mini All-Star break (rest).

"By Thursday, he should be pretty much back to normal with a full tank."

Baez is hitting .281 with 29 homers, a team-high 85 RBIs and an .848 OPS.

In another roster move, the Cubs also activated left-hander Derek Holland from the 10-day injured list. He recovered from a left wrist contusion and will be available Tuesday evening.
