(670 The Score) The White Sox have called up highly regarded infielder prospect Nick Madrigal, they announced Friday afternoon.

Madrigal, 23, is ranked as the No. 40 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com. The White Sox selected him at No. 4 overall in the first round of the 2018 amateur draft.

Madrigal will play second base and hit ninth in his MLB debut when Chicago plays at Kansas City on Friday night. He's expected to serve as the team's primary second baseman.

Madrigal hit .311 with four homers, 55 RBIs, a .377 on-base percentage and a .792 OPS in 120 games split across three minor league levels in 2019.

The timeline of Madrigal's promotion a week into the 60-game season came as no surprise. By waiting a week, the White Sox delayed the start of Madrigal's service time clock, ensuring an extra year of contract control on the back end of his deal.

In a corresponding move, Chicago designated reliever Kelvin Herrera for assignment.
