McCann, White Sox Reach 1-Year, $5.4-Million Deal
James McCann had a breakout 2019, being named an All-Star for the first time.
(670 The Score) The White Sox reached a one-year, $5.4-million deal with catcher James McCann on Monday afternoon.
McCann was arbitration-eligible and projected to earn $4.9 million in that process this winter, according to MLB Trade Rumors. McCann is set to become a free agent after the 2020 season.
McCann, 29, is coming off a breakout 2019 in which he was named an All-Star for the first time. McCann hit .273 with 18 homers, 60 RBIs and a .789 OPS in 118 games. The White Sox also praised McCann for his work with a young pitching staff.
By getting their business with McCann out of the way, the White Sox have solidified their catcher position early this offseason. In November, the White Sox signed All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal to a four-year, $73-million deal.
It's unclear exactly how the catching workload will be split up between Grandal and McCann, but there will be ample at-bats available for both with the designated hitter's slot in play as well.
