The 34-year-old Jay had been out all season as he dealt with a right hip strain that he suffered in March. The White Sox signed him to a one-year deal in January.

Jay was 21-of-63 in 16 rehab games split between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte.

Despaigne, 32, had struggled mightily at the back end of the White Sox's rotation, going 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in 13 1/3 innings across three starts. The White Sox had signed him in May.
