In return, Chicago received lefty reliever Brad Wieck and from San Diego. The Cubs also sent the Padres international bonus pool money. News of the trade was first reported by Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

A key member of the Cubs' bullpen when they won the World Series in 2016, Edwards struggled for most of this season and fell out of favor. He was demoted to Triple-A Iowa about a week into the regular season, then again demoted on July 22 after he had made a return to the big league team just days prior.

Edwards had a 5.87 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 20 appearances for the Cubs this season.

Wieck, 27, has most recently been playing at Triple-A, where he has a 6.11 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 14 appearances this season. He had a 6.57 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 30 appearances for the Padres earlier in the season.
