A day after All-Star catcher Willson Contreras was officially placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain that's expected to keep him out for four or so weeks, the Cubs on Monday also placed closer Craig Kimbrel on the 10-day injured list. Kimbrel is suffering from right knee inflammation. His injured list stint is expected to be of the minimum length, and he already had an MRI, which revealed the inflammation.

Kimbrel is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 14 appearances. He's 9-of-11 in save chances. Kimbrel last pitched Saturday, when he recorded a save in a 4-1 win against the Brewers. Afterward, he complained of discomfort in the knee.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled righty reliever Duane Underwood from Triple-A Iowa, where he has posted a 5.09 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 29 appearances this season.

Kimbrel joins setup man Pedro Strop (neck) on the injured list, though Strop is nearing a return. Brandon Morrow, the team's closer in 2018, has also been out all season because of an elbow injury.

Contreras' projected four-week absence comes after he strained his right hamstring running out a ball Saturday. He also suffered a serious hamstring injury in 2017.
