Baez, Contreras Continue To Lead In NL All-Star Voting

The All-Star Game will be played in Cleveland on July 9.

(670 The Score) In the second returns of All-Star voting, Cubs shortstop Javier Baez and catcher Willson Contreras continued to hold strong leads at their respective positions.

Baez has garnered more than 1.67 million votes, well ahead of the Braves' Dansby Swanson (764,663). Contreras has drawn more than 1.55 million votes, easily outpacing the Braves' Brian McCann (725,484).

The format for choosing All-Star starters has changed this season, as fans are currently in the primary round of voting, which runs through this Friday. The top three vote-getters at each position -- the top nine among outfielders -- then advance to what MLB has termed "Election Day," in which fans will vote on June 26-27 for the All-Star starters.

Anthony Rizzo sits in third among National League first basemen, with 948,047 votes. He trails the Pirates' Josh Bell (more than 1.1 million) and the Braves' Freddie Freeman (more than 1.02 million). 

Kris Bryant is second among NL third baseman, with 850,758 votes. The Rockies' Nolan Arenado leads with with more than 1.47 million votes.

Albert Almora Jr. (fourth), Jason Heyward (fifth) and Kyle Schwarber (eighth) are in the NL outfield mix and in line to reach the final round of voting.

Rizzo is a three-time All-Star, and Bryant is a two-time All-Star. Baez, Contreras and Heyward have each made it once.

The All-Star Game will be played in Cleveland on July 9.
