Cubs Reschedule Friday Game To 7:05

The Cubs will have more time to rest after their makeup game Thursday.

(670 The Score) The Cubs lost their case with MLB to push back a makeup game at the Washington Nationals on Thursday, but they were granted a break for Friday. The Cubs and Reds will play a 7:05 p.m. game on Friday, rescheduling it from the original 1:20 p.m. start.

In conjunction with the city of Chicago, the Cubs were granted permission to move back the start time to allow the team a buffer after traveling back from Washington D.C. for their makeup game with the Nationals. After playing the Brewers on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field, the Cubs will travel from Chicago to Washington D.C. to play the 3:05 p.m. game Thursday at Nationals Park before returning home again.

The Cubs lobbied MLB to reschedule the makeup game in Washington for Monday, Oct. 1, the day after the regular season is scheduled to end. The reasoning was twofold. The weather could become a problem Thursday in Washington D.C. as Hurricane Florence moves toward the East Coast, and the Cubs didn't want to make a trip only to have another game postponed.

The Cubs also are currently working through a stretch of 30 straight days with scheduled games after losing their off day Thursday, a situation that president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called "nearly unprecedented."

"Our position is that the game should be played the day after the season, just because of the burden of 30 consecutive days with games scheduled and the risk of flying in for a one-off with the possibility of a rain delay given what we went through," Epstein said on the Bernstein & McKnight Show on Wednesday morning. "But that's not the rule and that's not the way it's being enforced right now.

"We're in discussions with Major League Baseball awaiting their decision on the forecast and trying to make our case that it's unreasonable to ask this group of players to go 30 straight days with a game scheduled and possibly fly back to Washington and sit in a rain delay once again given the night game tonight and day game on Friday."

Instead, the Cubs will play a night game Friday in a change with some benefit.
